Myths about jewelry abound and may mislead you when you consider purchasing jewelry. Below are some common myths and their truth.
- Diamonds are Indestructible: While diamonds are the hardest natural material on earth, they are not indestructible. They can chip, crack or shatter under force.
- Bigger is Better: Higher carat weight does not mean better quality. It is just one of many factors that determine a gem’s worth. Other factors include: cut quality, clarity, color and more!
- Pure Gold Jewelry is Better: Pure 24Karat gold is not always a great option as it is extremely soft, easier to scratch, and bends more easily all of which makes it less practical for everyday use. Most jewelry is made from 14k or 18k gold because alloying gold with other metals makes it stronger, and more durable.
- White Gold is Naturally White: White gold is created using yellow gold mixed with white metals and coated with rhodium plating. Over time the plating may wear away, but it can be re-plated to restore the bright shiny finish.
- Lab Grown Stones are Fake: They are actually real gemstones, just grown in a lab and not underground. They are eco-friendly, ethically sourced and budget-friendly options.
- Real Silver doesn’t Tarnish: Sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% alloys added for strength, actually tarnishes more than fake silver. Look for the mark “925” to prove it is real and polish your sterling back to a bright shine!
