Celebrating the Family Business

Did you know that family businesses represent between 80 and 90% of American businesses? They can range in size from two-person partnerships to huge Fortune 500 companies and everything in between. Family businesses account for half of the US’s employment and half of its gross national product.

In Delaware, there are numerous family-owned businesses that span generations. For example, Kreston Wine and Spirits began in 1933 and is now a successful four-generation business with locations in both Wilmington and Middletown. And who hasn’t heard of Helen’s Sausage House in Smyrna? Using a family recipe passed down for four generations, Helen’s has been in business for 39 years, since 1983.

Also located in Smyrna, another long-time favorite is the Smyrna Diner. Around since 1956, the Smyrna Diner has been owned and operated by the same family since 1972. While just over the border in Maryland, Milburn Orchards is celebrating 120 years of family tradition.

These are just a few of the wonderful, family run businesses that surround us here in Delaware. We love to celebrate their resilience, ability to adapt to the changing marketplace and to keep serving their loyal customers.
