It’s Not Easy Being Green

For our May babies, it’s all about color – color of their birthstone, emerald, that is. The deeper or more green an emerald, the more valuable it is. Emeralds have been mined since as early as 330 BC by the Egyptians who used them in both their jewelry and their burials. Emeralds are found all over the world with Columbia as the largest producer.

The emerald is the symbol of loyalty, new beginnings, peace and security. In addition to being the birthstone for May, it is often used as anniversary gifts for 20 and 50 years. Unlike diamonds, the hardest gem, emeralds are much softer and should always be cleaned by hand to prevent chipping or cracking.

Cleopatra and Elizabeth Taylor were known to be emerald lovers. Do you have any emerald jewelry? Share on Bridgewater Jewelers Facebook page! If not, stop in to the store to get started on your own collection of this beautiful gem.
